How we work/Pilot Fund

Pilot Fund

Finance for the companies and pilots that put design guidance into practice on Nigerian streets.

About the fund

Guidance changes streets only when someone builds to it. The Pilot Fund supports the first builds and the companies that can repeat them, so that a design proven on one route can be bought and built on the next.

The fund supports two kinds of work:

  • Companies whose products or services put design guidance into practice, from paving and kerb suppliers to operators of shared bicycles.
  • Pilots on defined routes and sites, built with a state government, agency or university that owns the street.

How funding works

  • Grants for design and preparation work.
  • Recoverable grants, where a pilot is expected to generate revenue.
  • First-loss funding, where a build needs outside finance, so that lenders and investors can take part alongside us.
  • Funding released on adoption, paid when an agency or company takes the design on.

Who can apply

Companies that build, operate or finance infrastructure, and state governments and agencies with a site or route to pilot. The fund supports builds that follow design guidance from the Research Fund.

Other funds

Work can move between the funds: a Student Fund project may form the basis of a Research Fund grant, and the guidance that results may be put into practice through the Pilot Fund.
